Reflections on Project 1: The Object

The Object

Emerson Pappas

December 3rd, 2025
Major: Chemistry and Studio Art
Genre/Medium: Mixed media acrylic paint on canvas and acrylic beads
About the work:

“The Object” explores the focus and destination of the Psyche mission, the asteroid Psyche herself, in a mixed media acrylic painting with embroidered acrylic beads and graphic text. I wanted to highlight the different aspects of the Psyche mission, first being the asteroid, starting in this mixed media work. I treat my canvas like typical fabric by adding embroidery with beads on top of my paintings to show depth and texture. This changes the way the painting looks under different lighting and points of view, adding a sculptural element to an otherwise two dimensional medium. But, moving down the painting, the text at the bottom flattens the image again into a graphic advertisement. Over the past few years I have gravitated towards adding bold words to my work- I love the contrast between organic shapes like Psyche and the structure of English text. Like many science fiction lovers I grew up watching Star Trek, which I pull inspiration from in the slanted style of text I chose to paint. The colors I painted with, blue and orange, are not true to the asteroid, but instead are an over-saturated interpretation. Shadows often reflect cool tones whereas highlights pull warm, so I chose to dial up what I saw in images of the asteroid.

Reflections on Project 2: The Vessel

The Vessel

Emerson Pappas

February 2nd, 2026
Major: Chemistry & Studio Art
Genre/Medium: Mixed media screen print with wax colored pencils, alcohol markers, and acrylic paint on paper
About the work:

“The Vessel” depicts the satellite Psyche on its journey through space and the SpaceX Falcon Heavy that got it there. It is a seven edition mixed media print consisting of black and orange screen-printed outlines colored in with wax pencils, alcohol markers, and acrylic paint on textured white paper. I wanted to highlight the satellite Psyche and the rocket that launched it, without which the mission to reach the asteroid Psyche would be impossible. Drawing inspiration from the official Psyche color palette and science fiction posters, I took creative liberties in the colorway of both vessels in each edition. I approached the screen printed image like a coloring book, filling in the design with wax colored pencils and alcohol markers for vibrant tones.

The Journey

Major: Chemistry & Studio Art

Genre/Medium: Colored pencils (brand: prismacolor) on paper

About the Work:

“The Journey” is a vibrant colored pencil on paper depiction of Psyche’s Mars flyby and its trek through space. For project III, I wanted to highlight the satellite’s travels out of Earth’s orbit and towards Mars for the upcoming gravity assist. Drawing on past inspiration of sci-fi classics like Star Trek and adding a retro flair, I wanted to create a “wish you were here” type of postcard. Almost as if the satellite Psyche is sending all of its supporters a message from afar. In the work itself I used waxed based pencil colors to achieve depth through layering the different pigments. The juxtaposition of large, blocky text and the cursive “post card” font continues my exploration of words and art in my projects. As for the color palette, what better inspiration is there than the Psyche logo? Similar to my past work, I love “upping” the saturation of natural images; here I dialed up the vibrance of Mars’ orange surface and balanced it with deep space blues and purples.

The Crew

EMERSON PAPPAS

Major: Chemistry & Studio Art

Genre/Medium: Acrylic painting with fabric embroidery

About the Work:

“The Crew” is a mixed media painting of a Star Trek inspired uniform for all of the Psyche “crew” members: every person that has and continues to make the Psyche mission possible. It is an acrylic painting on canvas with fabric sewn on top complete with a painted metal Psyche insignia. The colors on the uniform are inspired by the official Psyche logo, and its design mimics the officer jackets seen in Star Trek. The canvas is designed to be held in front, so you can “try it on,” wearing the uniform yourself. In my fourth and final project, after exploring the asteroid, satellite, and path in my previous works, I wanted to highlight every Psyche team member. While I would love to complete portraits of everyone involved, time would not allow. However, creating a “uniform” that anyone can wear allows past, present, and future Psyche crew members to be included and appreciated.
